GPs under pressure to work weekends

Pressure on family doctors to open in the evenings and at weekends was stepped up yesterday by Alan Johnson, the health secretary.

"I think it is a bit of an anomaly that there is half-day closing on Wednesdays and Thursdays and you can't get to see a GP after you leave work," he said, while he wanted to see Saturday opening "more widespread".
