Construction workers last month began drilling holes and diverting traffic in Sandton and Rosebank, two northern Johannesburg business hubs. The work marked the physical start of something as rare as fish in the desert in the South African context: a massive and ambitious new public transport project.
The Gautrain, a high-speed, European-style rail link built with the help of the company that runs commuter trains in Paris, will whisk commuters between Johannesburg and Pretoria in just over half an hour.
