The US unemployment rate rose in July to 5.7 per cent - its highest level for four years - as the economy shed jobs for a seventh consecutive month, labour officials said yesterday.

The data provided further evidence of deterioration in the labour market, as companies in a broad range of sectors trimmed workforces to tackle the downturn.
