Swine flu sparks mental health law change

The government plans to make it easier for doctors to detain and forcibly medicate people with suspected mental health problems, under emergency measures being rushed through because of fears of medical staff shortages during a second wave of the swine-flu pandemic.

The Department of Health said it wanted a single doctor, rather than the usual two, to be able to place individuals in mental institutions and authorise them to receive drugs without consent.
