The funny thing about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 is how it took everyone by surprise – including the East German Communist party and the city’s divided population. Now we know that it was all a mistake, the unintended consequence of miscommunication by a regime in a state of panic, facing huge demonstrations by its citizens demanding the right to travel outside their country.
