Anger greets shrine visit by likely Koizumi successor

The man most likely to be Japan's next prime minister was engulfed in controversy yesterday when it was revealed he had made a secret visit to Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine earlier this year.

Shinzo Abe, the chief cabinet secretary, would not confirm or deny reports that he had made such a pilgrimage, but the shrine said he had signed its visitor's book on April 15.
