Sir Peter Burt and Sir George Mathewson face formidable obstacles in their audacious attempt to save HBOS from its takeover by Lloyds TSB.

The two grandees of Scottish banking, who previously slugged it out as chief executive of Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland respectively, have emerged from retirement united in a straightforward – if highly symbolic – proposal to keep Edinburgh-based HBOS independent.
