Mortgage data add to evidence of recovery

The number of mortgages approved by high street banks for house purchases fell slightly for only the second time this year in August, in a worrying sign that the housing slump may not be over.

But separate figures from the Bank of England pointed to a continuing economic recovery, as consumer spending grew and employers downplayed the prospect of further job cuts.
