FTSE falls on banks and miners

After a wildly volatile session, the FTSE 100 was lower as confidence in the banking sector was undermined by rumour and miners fell on fears of slowing growth.

HBOS, the mortgage lender, tumbled as much as 18 per cent at one stage on Wednesday morning on rumours – dismissed by the bank – that the mortgage lender was suffering from liquidity shortages.
