Philip Stephens is naturally entitled to support whoever he wishes in London’s mayoral election. (This page, February 5). I therefore only want to deal with one issue, his claim that: “Mr Livingstone retorts he should be judged on his record. The trouble is he does not have much of one.”
I will start with securing and negotiating the £16bn ($31bn) funding for the construction of Crossrail – the single largest transportation project in western Europe and the key foundation for the continued expansion of London’s central business district. Crossrail adds 10 per cent to London’s total public transport capacity. It will provide the infrastructure to support 200,000 jobs in central London. Two decades of effort had failed to secure funding for this and I consider it the single biggest transport achievement of my mayoralty to have put together the business and government package to secure it.
