Police in Bangladesh on Wednesday brought charges against Sheikh Hasina, a former prime minister, and 55 other political leaders for their alleged role in the murder of several people during street violence in Dhaka last October.
The charges mark an intensification of the crackdown against the Bangladeshi political elite that the country’s military-backed caretaker government has been waging since it declared a state of emergency and cancelled elections in January.
