Brown tries to counter Cameron advance

Gordon Brown will this week attempt to counter a Conservative resurgence in the polls with evidence that business leaders see him as a much more substantial figure than David Cameron, the Tory leader.

The chancellor, who is thought unlikely to face a heavyweight cabinet challenger when Tony Blair quits, probably in early May, may have to wait until at least the end of June before he can take over as prime minister, the Financial Times understands.
