Brown gathers new UK cabinet

Gordon Brown on Thursday held a first meeting of his new cabinet after appointing Jacqui Smith as Britain’s first female home secretary and the 41-year old David Miliband as foreign secretary.

In a complete makeover announced earlier in the day, Alistair Darling was confirmed as Mr Brown’s successor at the Treasury, where his deputy as chief secretary will be Andy Burnham. Jack Straw became justice secretary.
