Eisai buys MGI Pharma for $3.9bn

Eisaiyesterday said it would buy US biotech firm MGI Pharma for $3.9bn in the largest ever overseas all-cash acquisition by a Japanese pharma company.

The move by the country's fourth largest drugsmaker highlights growing pressure on Japanese pharmaceuticals to seek growth in overseas markets as the domestic market faces government-mandated price cuts and increasing competition from multinational competitors.
