UN agrees new sanctions against Iran

The United Nations Security Council imposed a third package of sanctions against Iran on Monday, targeting individuals most closely involved with its alleged nuclear weapons programme and turning up the heat on banks suspected of financing it.

In a separate statement, the five permanent members of the council and Germany nevertheless said they were committed to pushing for an early negotiated settlement of the stand-off with Tehran.
