US banks tighten grip on lending

US banks have pulled back on lending to consumers and businesses in a big way over the past three months, as demand for credit also dwindled, the Federal Reserve said ­on Monday.

In its quarterly survey of loan officers, the US central bank said 85 per cent of banks – compared with 60 per cent in the three months to July – had tightened standards on commercial and industrial loans to large and medium-sized ­clients.
