Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, on Tuesday praised the security conditions in Iraq, almost one month after US combat troops completed their ­withdrawal from Iraqi ­cities .

Mr Gates, who was visiting the country for the first time this year, said there was a “real sense of Iraqi empowerment by the Iraqis”.
