East Europe bankers see tough times ahead

Bankers and officials working in eastern Europe on Friday warned of contracting credit markets, mounting bad debts and tough times ahead, as the latest economic data showed the region plunging deeper into recession.

Delegates gathered in London at the annual meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development generally said they saw little sign of improvement, even though the sense of crisis in financial markets had eased since the winter.
