US troops could exit Baghdad 'by July'

American combat troops could be pulled out of Baghdad within 10 months as the result of declining violence in the Iraqi capital, according to General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq.

The sight of US soldiers exiting Baghdad would be highly symbolic given the scale of violence that gripped the city in 2006 and 2007. There are roughly 16,000 US combat troops in Baghdad currently.
