EU governments agree to boost development aid

European Union governments on Tuesday signed up to a plan to increase development aid by billions of euros over the next five years, but some countries warned that their ability to honour the pledge depended on the state of public finances.

Development ministers agreed to increase average EU aid to 0.56 per cent of national income by 2010, as a waystation to reaching 0.7 per cent by 2015.
