Sarkozy in move to hasten economic reforms

France's parliament this week adopted economic reforms designed to deregulate the retail industry, establish an independent competition authority and help companies to skirt the statutory 35-hour working week.

The measures cap a burst of activity by Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of the summer break. The French president, who today receives Barack Obama, the presumptive US Democratic presidential candidate, also this week secured backing for constitutional reforms.
