Republican candidates defend trade rules

The main candidates for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday mounted a strong defence of free trade policies, warning that a return to protectionism would be disastrous for the US economy.

All four leading Republican hopefuls – Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and John McCain – advocated pro-growth, free-market policies during a debate on economic issues in Michigan.
