London mayor gives go-ahead to water plant

A deal with Thames Water to cut the number of roadworks in London was unveiled by Boris Johnson, as the Tory mayor yesterday sought to maintain momentum in his second week in office.

Plans by Thames Water to build Britain's first water desalination plant on the banks of the Thames will now go ahead, after Mr Johnson yesterday dropped his predecessor's legal appeal against the £200m development as part of his deal with the company.
