‘Unsackable’ Darling is his own man at last

Alistair Darling has gone from political death row to apparently impregnable chancellor in a matter of hours, after he faced down Gordon Brown in a battle of wills in Downing Street on Wednesday night.

Mr Brown’s inability to replace Mr Darling with his ally Ed Balls – as he intended – has significantly altered the balance of power between prime minister and chancellor. “He’s basically unsackable now,” said one Treasury official.
