Savings guarantee rises to £50,000

The level of savings in British bank accounts guaranteed by the government will next week be formally raised to £50,000 from £35,000.

The switch will come into force next Tuesday, the Financial Services Authority announced on Friday. The City watchdog also reserved the right to raise the limit further if necessary.
