Ozone-friendly gases 'cause global warming'

International action has stabilised the hole in the ozone layer, but the chemicals used as substitutes for ozone-depleting compounds are causing global warming, a United Nations body said yesterday.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that ozone-depleting chemicals such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and the common alternatives to them contributed about 5 per cent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions.
