Toshiba launches new DVD format ahead of rival Sony

Toshiba has launched the world's first high-definition DVD player to Japaneseconsumers, stealing a march on rival Sony, which plans to start selling a competing optical disc format thisyear.

The player, which promises to deliver cinematic quality images, went on sale yesterday for about Y110,000 ($936) in most stores and sold out almost immediately in some.
