The sense of crisis surrounding the British government deepened on Wednesday as Hazel Blears, the communities secretary, became the fourth minister in 24 hours to resign.
Ms Blears, who had been tipped for a demotion in a forthcoming reshuffle, said she wanted to spend more time campaigning in her Salford constituency near Manchester.
