Sharp rise in audit fees for councils

Councils are set to be hit with a sharp rise in the fees they must pay to the Audit Commission - the group charged with making sure that taxpayers get value for money from council services.

Some local authority leaders are fuming at the irony of having to pay more in audit fees while they struggle to keep council tax levels down.
