A cross-party committee of MPs on Monday cast doubt on the government’s professed ability to make extra savings through efficiency.

An additional £15bn ($25bn) of savings over and above the £35bn already planned were identified at the time of April’s Budget, in a clutch of reports commissioned by the Treasury from outside business people.
