President Nicolas Sarkozy began a peace mission to the Middle East on Monday, underlining his intention to remain centre stage of European diplomacy after the end of the French presidency of the European Union.

But his initiative, parallel to a visit by EU foreign ministers and officials led by the Czech government, the new holders of the EU presidency, triggered criticism from elsewhere in the bloc.
