Sharia law in UK 'unavoidable'

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the world's Anglicans, risked fuelling a political controversy yesterday by suggesting that Britain should "constructively accommodate" certain aspects of Sharia law.

Dr Williams told the BBC that the application of Sharia law in the UK in certain circumstances such as financial transactions and marital mediation "seems unavoidable" to achieve social cohesion.
