Trade gap grows to its widest in 16 years

The trade deficit in 2005 widened to its worst in 16 years, with the gap between imports and exports of goods and services relative to the size of the economy close to its post-war record.

One telling detail was that for the first full year since 1979, the balance of trade in oil was in deficit, by £670m.
