City stalwarts attack Darling’s banking reforms

Alistair Darling’s blueprint for reforming the financial regulatory regime on Wednesday failed to impress the City and drew withering fire from the Conservatives, who vowed to reverse the report’s main proposals should the party win the next election.

The government paper, presented by the chancellor on Wednesday, called for higher regulatory capital requirements for “systemically significant firms”, entrusting the Financial Services Authority with the task of determining capital levels.
