Sarkozy to face EU wrath over deficit

Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president, can expect a rough ride from European finance ministers next week over his plan to delay by two years the elimination of his country’s deficit, the EU’s incoming Portuguese presidency has warned.

France and Italy, the eurozone’s second and third-biggest economies respectively, risk a clash with Germany and other single currency countries by going back on a promise to run a “close to balance” budget by 2010.
