Plan to liberalise docks faces failure

The European parliament looks set to reject a plan to open ports to more competition on Wednesday after socialists, liberals and some conservatives jointly opposed the bill put forward by the European Commission.

The fate of the port services bill was effectively decided on Monday in private political meetings in Strasbourg, while thousands of dockworkers clashed with police in violent scenes outside the European Union parliament building.
