Bouton makes the case for autonomy

The possible break-up of Citigroup showed the dangers of trying to create value through big banking mergers, the chairman of Société Générale, said Thursday.

Daniel Bouton staunchly defended SocGen’s autonomy when it was a potential takeover target after the rogue trading scandal a year ago and saw off a hostile bid from BNP Paribas, its larger French rival, in 1999.
