Agenda: Margins rise steeply as activity soars

Few businesses, in the current economic slowdown, have been able to charge their customers more and attract them in greater numbers. But spread betting is one, and this newspaper is another – facts that are not unconnected, according to the firms providing spread bets and contracts for difference (CFDs).

Daily news of bank bail-outs and retail closures has led to regular 200-point intra-day movements in stock market indices – making leveraged bets one of the few ways to turn a profit or protect a portfolio.
