FSA plans closer City scrutiny

Top UK financial institutions face greater scrutiny from the Financial Services Authority under proposals to be published on Wednesday by the regulatory watchdog to correct weaknesses in its industry supervision exposed by its handling of Northern Rock, the nationalised bank.

The FSA has come under fire for its supervision of the bank and an internal audit to be released will lay out its thinking on the lessons it needs to learn.
