After a six-day mission to the Middle East, Tony Blair flew home yesterday having appeared at times to be frustrated at every turn.

While the intractable nature of many of the region's difficulties has disappointed the hopes of many statesmen before him, the gulf between the prime minister's ambitions and his accomplishments was particularly striking.
