Television makes it no easier to call

When Gerald Ford made the mistake that cost him the 1976 election, denying in his televised debate with Jimmy Carter the existence of Soviet domination of Poland and the rest of eastern Europe, I was asleep on Stinson Beach.

It did not matter because this newspaper, in the pre-FT.com era, had also long gone to bed.
