London mining and metals sectors buckle

Metals companies bore the brunt of heavy selling on Friday as the London market lurched to its worst weekly performance in more than six years.

Platinum specialist and car catalyst maker Johnson Matthey was the day’s sharpest faller. It dropped 8.5 per cent to £14.41 after being cut from the “buy” list of Merrill Lynch, its joint house broker.
