Growing fears of backlash as BNP seeks to make capital

Politicians and religious leaders across Leeds acted swiftly yesterday to try to prevent a backlash against the city's sizeable Muslim population.

As local people struggled to come to terms with the knowledge that the suspected suicide bombers who carried out last week's attacks in London were home-grown terrorists, there are mounting fears of reprisal attacks and even of a repeat of the race riots that hit several former mill towns in the north of England four years ago.
