Guido Mantega: Interventionist basking in new economic orthodoxy

Guido Mantega, Brazil’s finance minister, is finally in his element.

For years he languished in opposition as economic adviser to the left-wing PT (Workers’ Party), his views clashing with the orthodox, market-friendly policies introduced by the previous government and which the Lula administration surprised many by keeping largely in place from 2003.
