EU to slash emissions from new cars

The average new car sold in the European Union in 2020 will have to use less fuel than almost all conventional models on the road today, under plans being drawn up by the European Parliament.

Guido Sacconi, the Italian Socialist drafting the legislation, proposes to cut average carbon emissions from new cars to 95g per kilometre travelled by 2020 compared with 160g in 2006.
