Nigeria president replaces military chiefs

President Umaru Yar’Adua has replaced the country’s most senior military officers, hoping the new team will prove more effective in containing an insurgency undermining oil production in the Niger Delta.

The appointments of a new head of the army, navy and chief of defence staff represent the first major change of military officers since Mr Yar’Adua took office in May last year.
