Shape of the industry: Bumpy ride likely for manufacturers

For decades, railway operators which wanted rolling stock followed a time-honoured method. The technical department would draw up a design and a manufacturer – sometimes the railway’s own works and often the local manufacturer the railway always used – would build it.

There have been huge changes to that system, with small local manufacturers gradually being bought out, mainly by Bombardier Transportation of Canada, Alstom of France and Siemens of Germany.
