Motor neurone disease patients to test lithium

The National Health Service is to test promising evidence that lithium, a drug widely used to treat severe depression, could be the first effective treatment for motor neurone disease.

More than 200 UK patients with MND, one of the most common fatal brain diseases, will be recruited for a clinical trial of lithium over the next two years, the Motor Neurone Disease Association announced on Sunday.
