Police have widened their investigations into suspected leaking of government information across Whitehall as the row over the arrest of Damian Green, the Conservative MP, intensified.

Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, told MPs there had been “other situations where the police have been invited to investigate by the Cabinet Office”, after res­ponding to a question on the stream of sensitive pre-Budget leaks.
