Farmers on red alert for bird flu

Unease ran through the poultry industry as farmers admitted they were “on red alert” for signs that their birds were about to succumb to avian flu.

Poultry and egg farmers have feared an outbreak for several years, with “bio-security” measures, such as increased hygiene and closer monitoring of flocks, in operation since the discovery of a dead swan in Scotland in April last year.
